By 1974, Rio de Janeiro songwriter Jorge Ben had reached a point where his music felt both assured and slightly unmoored, drawing freely on mysticism and everyday life without much concern for how neatly it all fitted together. This album, often held up as his defining work, leans into that instinct with Afro-Brazilian identity and stray narrative details that seem to carry private meaning. 'Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas' opens with a sense of gathering momentum, guitar patterns looping as the vocal presses forward. 'Zumbi' lands with a firmer weight, its refrain sticking, while 'O Homem Da Gravata Florida' turns a peculiar image into something oddly precise.
