Later American singer Marlena Shaw originally released The Spice of Life in 1969 and it soon became seen as. landmark of soul-jazz. Produced and arranged by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney, the newly issued album fuses soul, proto-funk, jazz, gospel and blues with Shaw's voice both playful and powerful throughout. Highlights include the socially charged classic 'Woman of the Ghetto' and her iconic rendition of Ashford & Simpson's 'California Soul,' both of which have become staples in sampling culture. Inventive arrangements featuring kalimba, bongo-driven organ and psych-tinged guitar enhance each track, while songs like 'Looking Through the Eyes of Love' and 'Stormy Monday' show Shaw's great range.
