PRINCE FAR I Jamaican Heroes (reissue) Music On Vinyl

On his ninth album, Jamaican Heroes, celebrated reggae artist and proud Rastafarian Prince Far I worked with musicians like Roots Radics and The Flying Lizards. His own distinctive voice remains the central characteristic of all the tunes though, and the production by Anthony "Crucial Bunny" Graham at Channel One in Jamaica remains vital. This must have record covers plenty of subjects close to the artists's own heart and each one has a special hook or nice rumbling boss, fly-away toms or stoner chords. This version comes on heavyweight orange vinyl and there are only 750 copies.

Winston McAnuff has a hearty collection of classics in his back catalogue. Many of them are hard to find or totally out of print, but labels like Roots Vibration have done a fine job of bring them back into the game. This time out it is Hands & Hearts that serve up his 'Ten Thousand Of Them.' It's a timeless roller with fat drums that sit perfectly with the even fatter bass. On the flip 10 Strings Meets Unitone for a collaborative dub entitled '10,000 Dub' that strips it back to the bare essentials.
Having already released a handful of singles on NICE UP! it seemed like high time for Nottingham's Origin One (aka Kevin Thomson) to step up with his debut album. Written and produced over the space of around 2 years in the artists own Deeper Than Roots studio, the album represents a wider spectrum of roots and reggae influenced music, taking the foundations of this music and applying a modern style and sound to it, traversing dancehall, bashment, grime, jungle and dubstep along the way.

You can't overestimate the importance of The Heptones in the evolution of Jamaican music, after they defined the transition from ska to rocksteady and on to reggae. This album, "Back On Top", captures the band in the early '80s, when they had reached an international audience after working with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and releasing on Island Records. By this point they were back producing themselves, creating a perfect spanning sweet ballads and upbeat skankers, not to mention a cover of The Beatles' "Yesterday". Lovingly repressed on 180 gram red vinyl, this is a welcome reissue of an album that's been tricky to get hold of for some time, from one of the all time great reggae acts.
