Very Ltd Edition 12"EP on this highly intriguing label.. musical, captivating and a more than a bit nuts. BIG TIP!

Hailing from the Ruhrgebiet and now based in Cologne, sound enthusiast and percussionist Tulips is cofounder of the free-wheeling improv kraut group NASSSAU, plays together with TRJJ (of Belgium’s Stroom crew) in the duo P.VEE, and is part of Cologne’s dub-minded jam hounds MONTEL PALMER.

Produced in his bedroom, the sonic palette for this EP derives from primitive key improvisations to talking percussion worlds as part of extended cosmic excursions to unknown paramós. All tracks on Matas Flores y Algo Más were jammed and recorded between late 2018 and early 2019, using an array of digital and analog synthesis, such as the Juno 106 and Yamaha DX7, and the Korg Wavedrum and Pearl SC40.

The opening track Self Similar Melodies carries itself with a certain weightlessness, as drifting keys and oscillating bleeps grasp for an unreachable climax somewhere on the horizon. As the synth layers gradually build throughout A Bird Feeder, electronic tones chirrup like chaffinches, while the distinct feeling of sunrise breaks through the music.

On the B side, Retrograde II winds on a syrupy slow garage lean with bright riffs and interlocking percussive signatures. The marimba tones and loping bass of Same Scene conjure up tropical twilights from a Ballardian dimension, and the EP closes with Matsutake , a twisting rhythm in conversation with itself amid a mirage of lurching synths and pitch-shifting modulations.

A 124 / B1 124 / B2 124 // Len Faki releases the second EP from his Basement Trax series on Ostgut Ton. While the first part of this 2013-established series was characterised by its vocals, spheric sounds and melodies, the Berghain resident almost completely passes on these elements with Vol. 02. All three distinct, functional, composed tracks, oscillate at about 124 BPM, reflecting Faki's experienced eye for the peak time at Wriezener Bahnhof and dance floors from around the world. “These tracks are crafted from the same mould, but they differ by their character – it's a bit like a family affair, by looking into their eyes you can tell the connection,“ says Len. “After coming home from a Sunday evening set at Berghain I felt inspired and content. This feeling and energy was still present the next day – that's how all tracks were created – in the same session with the same flow,“ he explains. “Generally speaking these tracks are slower than quite a few House or Techno tracks – but you won't realize it straight away.“ The tracks are also constructed in a similar way, yet differently: With “B-PAX” and “For Real” Faki takes his time to set the tone before adding melodic elements, bleeps or finally some hints of ambient sounds. Precisely because of the reduction of its musical elements this release gains even more momentum: “A track like ‘Hainish Cycle’ is an example for those moments of trance, of zero gravity without a sense of time at Berghain. Which is why the rhythmic hi-hat kicks in only more than halfway through. Everything's in flux and harmony already, you almost don't need it.“ But then: some more energy for the masses inside the dark room.
Written after a trip home to Swaziland, now known as eSwatini, Sydney recorded the sound of life there after completing studies of sonic signatures and comparison of traditional instruments around the world. When there, the third generation Brownswood Future Bubbler artist hooked up with local man Ralph who took him on some rich journeys and to meet amazing local musicians, all with the aim of making a body of work that used traditional worldly sounds in authentic new ways.“The creative energy in eSwatini is so healthy and powerful that there's too many projects to list, but one that stood out was Mr Freddy, involving Ralph Smitt and Mwesigwa Kisaakye, a mixing bowl of psychedelic world improv which I helped record at Semitone Records, and later was mixed by myself and Louise Grainger and released via Stay Put, a small collective I am part of who run parties in Bristol and host a fortnightly radio show on Noods Radio. The Intro to the Album played by me and Ralph became the intro to this album as we shared the journey!”The richly atmospheric tracks are spiritual, organic affairs with indigenous percussion, tumbling drums and spoken word samples that are beautifully earthy. Broken beats with drifting sax lines, lazy deep house and jazzy hip hop that oozes soul all feature and make this record a perfectly escapist and immersive listen.
Fluid sounds, warm musical waves. Acid ghosts leaving their graves. The smell of life as it comes back. Sensations high & low what do you expect. The return of the underground, what's that sound? Aroma Pitch Club takeover, madness bound !
