In the summer of 2026 in Sète, the Worldwide Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

For twenty years, this small town in the south of France has welcomed Brits, Germans, Japanese and, more broadly, eclectic music fans from all over France and the world every summer, who set aside a week of their holidays to dance to soulful jazz, sunny house and drum and bass in an open-air amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean.

It has also been twenty years since Gilles Peterson, a leading figure in British DJing and a tireless talent scout, teamed up with a bunch of misfits from Montpellier to launch a project that had no business succeeding. Too intimate, too niche, too far removed from the usual standards and too isolated from the major cities. And yet, Worldwide is now an institution that sells out before a single name in its line-up has even been announced.

This book tells the story of this unlikely adventure. That of an event that became a cult phenomenon in spite of itself, which nearly disappeared several times, but which held firm to leave a lasting mark on everyone who sets foot there.

Through sweeping narratives, colourful behind-the-scenes anecdotes, portraits and interviews with iconic artists, this book celebrates twenty years of DIY culture, of embracing precariousness with grace, and of fleeting moments of madness that have become lasting memories.

The book is hardback, limited edition, 256 pages and published in French and English.
